as a designer I work with reason. as a painter i work with feelings. As a teacher I work with both.
All design – be it product, transportation, print, motion – is about communication. It is about connecting with the right audience by telling the right story and eliciting the right emotion in the most effective way possible, usually with the intent of motivating behavior to drive revenue. Every font, color, image, sound, and movement must contribute to the story, support the intention, and elicit the right emotion. This is my objective as a designer.
As an instructor my goal is to help students acquire the skills and develop the critical thinking necessary to do this. Every aspect of their work should support this objective. In my classes they learn to work with intention.
As a painter my goal is to do just the opposite.
